Academic UIL
The University Interscholastic League (UIL) is an organization that provides academic, athletic, and music competitions for students in Texas. It was established in 1910 and is the largest interschool organization of its kind in the world. While it encompasses a wide variety of events, Academic UIL focuses specifically on a range of subjects and academic challenges for middle and high school students.
Academic UIL includes competitions in subjects like:
-
Math – events like Number Sense, Calculator Applications, and Mathematics
-
Science – covering topics covered in 7th and 8th grade
-
Writing – writing an essay on a chosen topic
-
Listening Skills – taking notes over a given speech and answering questions about what was heard
-
Social Studies – testing knowledge in history, economics, and geography
-
Spelling – written exam using spelling and grammar knowledge
-
Speaking – Events like Oral Reading, Impromptu Speaking, and Modern Oratory
-
Art – being able to look at a picture and determine its title and the artist's name
UIL competitions aim to promote educational excellence and encourage students to apply their knowledge in real-world settings. Students typically compete individually but contribute to the overall school's score.
UIL also emphasizes the development of skills such as critical thinking, public speaking, and collaboration, all of which help students build confidence and academic prowess.
Art Club
In BMS Art Club, we explore unique mediums exclusive to the after-school art club. Specific lessons for the art club may include how to draw hands, faces and skulls. We focus on how to break those down into simpler forms then we paint them. We use exclusive materials such as canvas and ceiling tiles to explore their creativity. A highlight of the club is the "Drawing Game" where the teacher describes a character or fictional creature and the club members then draw it without knowing what it looks like. Students are then rewarded with snacks for their accuracy or guessing the character. In addition, we also decorate different areas of the school with paintings on windows or on canvas for all of BMS to enjoy.
Art club is a relaxing and fun time for all who attend.
Drama Club
Our Mission is to empower and uplift student voices by giving them a means of expression onstage. We aim to inspire students and encourage positive relationships, communication, collaboration, and creative skills on and offstage. Students in drama classes participate in devising original skits, writing scripts, memorizing lines, creating products, and whole-body activities that help them develop characters. Students at Brewer Middle School are also encouraged to audition for after-school productions and participate in drama clubs.
FFA Organization
Students in the Principles of Agriculture at BMS will learn about FFA, animal breeds, flowers, welding, and more. During class time, students will plant seeds, memorize speeches, and learn the importance of shop safety. Our FFA organization has many different opportunities for students to partake in, such as raising animals, competing on teams, and community service events. These opportunities allow students to learn time management, public speaking skills, properly caring for a livestock animal and many other skills they will carry with them throughout their future endeavors. Agriculture is used daily, from farm animals to grocery store food to metal frame supporting buildings. This class, in partnership with the FFA department, aims to highlight the importance of agriculture in our daily lives.
Gaming Club
Our mission is to foster a safe, competitive environment where students can harness their passion for gaming. We strive to cultivate teamwork, sportsmanship, and personal growth through organized online tournaments and friendly matches.
Gaming promotes skill development, strategic thinking, and digital citizenship while instilling respect, resilience, and sportsmanship. While the games students play may change the Legacy students leave behind, the life experiences students gain will last forever.
